EVEN THOUGH the low floor buses and AC low floor buses have hit the East Delhi roads, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus stops, which are in existence since a very long time have been found to be in very bad shape. Many of the bus stops in West Delhi too, have either been broken or have been encroached.

Soem time back, the Delhi High Court had directed the DTC to remove all encroachments from bus stops.

The residents of Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Uttam Nagar, Dabri, Naraina and Dwarka areas have drawn the attention of the transport department towards the pathetic conditions of the bus stops but their efforts have been futile, as the problem is still very much in existence.

IT IS really saddening and upsetting that with only two hundred days left for the Commonwealth games to start in India its preparations and arrangements are still going on in slow motion. What is even more disturbing is the miserable condition of workers at Commonwealth games construction sites. The authorities or contractors seem unaware of labor laws. They are making the labourers work the whole day long, with minimum wages, sometimes even overtime, with no bonus, no hygienic food, and no safe working conditions.

A four member committee was set up to inquire into allegations leveled in a PIL that said the condition of workers at CWG sites is wretched and miserable. They have been provided no safety gears in case any accident occurs. Why would the contractors worry? The accidents that occur at CWG construction sites always go unreported and never come to light.

No doubt the Commonwealth games are going to be a huge event and it’s a matter of our country’s reputation and prestige that the best preparations and arrangements be made. But authorities cannot take the lives of poor workers for granted. They cannot make them work overtime with meager wages and no safety gear. This is absolutely unacceptable. It’s high time the authorities that have been busy preparing for Commonwealth games look into the matter and come out with effective solutions as soon as possible.
